Inside Coral Mountain Desert Club: La Quinta’s New Golf-and-Surf Community

La Quinta Tommy Jordan August 5, 2026

Coral Mountain Desert Club is taking shape at the base of Coral Mountain in south La Quinta. The private residential and club community is planned around championship golf, nearby surf access, racquet sports, fitness, recovery, outdoor recreation, and a collection of modern desert residences.

The approximately 400-acre project officially broke ground in April 2026. Its first golf, club, and surf amenities are currently targeted for completion in 2028.

What makes Coral Mountain different is not one feature by itself. La Quinta already has exceptional private golf communities. This project is attempting to combine a new David McLay Kidd course with an invitation-only club, modern wellness facilities, family recreation, and access to a separate private surf basin in Thermal.

Quick Answer: What Is Coral Mountain Desert Club?

Coral Mountain Desert Club is a new private residential and club community under development in La Quinta, California.

  • Approximately 400 acres in south La Quinta
  • Roughly 300 planned homesites
  • Private 18-hole course by David McLay Kidd
  • Member access to a four-acre surf basin in Thermal
  • Homesites reported from $1.75 million
  • First major amenities targeted for 2028

Membership is invitation-only and separate from purchasing real estate. Pricing, dues, availability, and completion dates should be confirmed before buying.

Project information and published pricing were last checked August 4, 2026. Plans, prices, availability, fees, and completion dates can change.

1. What Is Coral Mountain Desert Club?

Coral Mountain Desert Club is being developed by Meriwether Companies as a private residential community and members club. The project occupies one of the largest remaining undeveloped parcels in south La Quinta and is designed around five main parts of club life: golf, fitness and recovery, racquet sports, social programming, and surf.

Meriwether describes the community as approximately 400 acres, while its portfolio page lists the underlying land parcel at 384 acres. The developer currently plans roughly 300 homesites, including custom homesites, estate homesites, villas, golf cottages, and Club Cottages.

The project is still in an early stage. Renderings show the intended design and lifestyle, but they should not be treated as photographs of completed facilities. The official community website states that proposed plans may change and that there is no guarantee every depicted feature will be built exactly as shown.

2. Where Is Coral Mountain Desert Club?

Coral Mountain Desert Club is located in south La Quinta near Madison Street, between Avenue 58 and Avenue 60, at the base of Coral Mountain. The City of La Quinta identifies the project area as part of the approved Coral Mountain Club plan within the larger Andalusia Specific Plan area.

The setting places the community near Andalusia, PGA West, The Hideaway, The Madison Club, the Empire Polo Club, and other established communities in the southern end of La Quinta. Old Town La Quinta, Highway 111 shopping, restaurants, golf, hiking, and regional event venues remain within driving distance.

This is a quieter and more recreational part of La Quinta than the Highway 111 corridor. Buyers should decide whether that separation is an advantage or whether they would rather be closer to everyday shopping, restaurants, and medical services. Our guide to where to live in La Quinta explains how the city’s main areas differ.

3. Homesites, Residences, and Starting Prices

Coral Mountain is expected to include a mix of custom homesites, estate homesites, villas, golf cottages, and Club Cottages. Published launch coverage has placed homesite pricing from $1.75 million, but the official website currently directs interested buyers to an inquiry list rather than publishing a complete current price sheet.

The starting price of a homesite is only one part of the purchase. A buyer may also need to calculate construction costs, architectural requirements, landscape and pool improvements, HOA dues, club initiation fees, recurring membership dues, taxes, insurance, and the cost of maintaining a larger desert property.

Buyers should also ask whether a homesite is being sold with a required builder, an approved design team, a construction deadline, minimum square footage, or separate design-review obligations. These details can materially change the real cost and timeline of building.

4. The David McLay Kidd Golf Course

The community will be anchored by a private 18-hole championship course designed by David McLay Kidd. Meriwether describes it as Kidd’s first desert-style links course and his first course in the Coachella Valley.

Kidd is known for courses that use the natural landform and give players different strategic choices rather than relying only on length. At Coral Mountain, the routing is planned to work with the sandy site, mountain backdrop, and natural desert setting.

The first phase is expected to include the golf course, a driving range, and two elevated comfort stations. A range pavilion and golf-support facilities are also shown in the project’s conceptual plans.

For a buyer, the course name is only the beginning. The exact homesite position may affect privacy, afternoon sun, mountain views, cart-path activity, maintenance noise, golf-ball exposure, and how the property feels when the course is busy. 5. How the Private Surf Access Is Expected to Work

The planned wave basin will not be located inside the main Coral Mountain property. It is being developed as an annex club amenity at Thermal Beach Club, less than 10 minutes away in Thermal.

The proposed four-acre, 48-chamber pneumatic basin is intended to create adjustable waves for different skill levels. Coral Mountain Desert Club and Thermal Beach Club members are expected to have access, with private dining, pools, and lounge areas also planned around the surf facility.

The distinction matters. A buyer should not assume that purchasing a Coral Mountain home automatically includes unrestricted surf access. The official community website states that home purchase does not grant club access and that membership requires a separate application, fees, and additional terms.

6. Planned Amenities Beyond Golf and Surf

Coral Mountain is being designed as more than a traditional golf club. Current plans include:

  • Four padel courts
  • Eight pickleball courts
  • Three tennis courts
  • Resort-style pools
  • A recreational lake
  • A pump track and bike or skate areas
  • Fitness and recovery facilities
  • Massage treatment rooms, steam, sauna, cold plunges, and hot tubs
  • Private dining and member lounges
  • Family and social programming
  • Walking, biking, and golf-cart trails
  • Guided access toward more than 20,000 acres of adjacent public land

The clubhouse is being designed by Hart Howerton as the social and wellness center of the community. The current concept combines dining, lounges, training, recovery, hospitality, and an outfitters hub rather than separating every activity into a traditional country-club format.

7. Construction Timeline and Current Status

Meriwether announced the official launch and groundbreaking of Coral Mountain Desert Club on April 9, 2026. Construction of the initial phase is underway.

City approvals provide more detail on the residential plan. A 2025 tentative tract map subdivided approximately 390 acres west of Madison Street into 204 single-family lots, three future condominium parcels totaling 29.1 acres, and separate golf, open-space, roadway, well, and commercial parcels. In May 2026, the La Quinta Planning Commission approved the first residential phase, including 91 single-family homes.

The developer currently expects the first amenities, the golf course, and the Thermal wave basin to be completed in 2028. The official website says the sales office is opening soon, but it does not yet publish a complete residential release schedule.

A projected completion year is not a guaranteed delivery date. Early buyers should ask what is under construction, what remains proposed, which amenities are included in the first phase, and what happens if a facility opens later than expected.

8. Membership, HOA Costs, and What Buyers Should Verify

Membership at Coral Mountain Desert Club is by invitation only. Real estate ownership and club membership are separate, and purchasing a home does not automatically provide access to the club.

Before purchasing, buyers should obtain current written information covering:

  • Real Estate: Available property types, current pricing, lot premiums, reservation terms, deposits, builder requirements, and construction deadlines
  • Membership: Availability, application and approval requirements, initiation fees, monthly dues, family privileges, guest access, resignation terms, and transfer rules
  • Surf Access: Which membership categories include Thermal Beach Club, usage rules, reservations, guest privileges, and additional charges
  • HOA Costs: Monthly dues, included services, reserves, insurance, security, common areas, planned assessments, and separate sub-associations
  • Amenities: Which facilities are committed, which are conceptual, construction phases, projected completion dates, and temporary facilities during buildout
  • Homesite Position: Golf exposure, views, sun, wind, road activity, nearby construction, trails, maintenance areas, and future neighboring homes
  • Use Rules: Rental restrictions, guest policies, pets, parking, golf carts, design review, landscaping, solar, pools, and exterior modifications

Coral Mountain may offer an unusual collection of amenities, but the ownership structure should still be evaluated the same way as any other private community: read the documents, calculate the complete annual cost, and separate confirmed terms from early marketing plans.

9. Is Coral Mountain Desert Club Right for You?

Coral Mountain may be a strong fit for a buyer who wants new construction, private-club living, modern wellness amenities, championship golf, mountain views, outdoor recreation, and a surf component that is uncommon in the desert.

It may be less comfortable for someone who wants a completed community with an established resale history, confirmed operating expenses, mature landscaping, and every amenity available immediately. Those buyers may prefer to compare Coral Mountain with existing La Quinta clubs before making a decision.

The most important question is not whether the concept is impressive. It is whether the property, membership structure, timeline, complete cost, and location match how you intend to use the home.
